ABOUT US
Welcome to Drum Up — a vibrant community drumming group dedicated to bringing people and rhythms together.
We are a collective of drummers: some seasoned percussionists, others just beginning their musical journey. In 2025, the Bowtell brothers wanted to return to drumming and explore a few new ideas — and so, Drum Up was born.
Creativity. Collaboration. Inclusion. Innovation.
Daniel was the founding Musical Director of Wasamba!! Freo's Carnival Drummers. Established in 2003, the group brought community members together and delivered colourful, energetic performances to the streets of Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney. Daniel later moved to Broome, where he decided to do it all again by founding Wasamba Broome in 2015.
In 2011, Ben took over as Musical Director. Wasting no time, he led Wasamba on its first international tour to Sicily, Croatia, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In 2017, the group performed at the New Zealand Winter Festival, and in 2019 returned to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe before performing at Notting Hill Carnival. After a decade leading the group, Ben stepped away to join Cirque du Soleil.
Today, Drum Up is focused on exploring new ideas and finding creative ways to bring percussion to the streets while incorporating rhythms and influences from around the world.
We’ve chosen to wear black as our foundation — but we’re excited to incorporate colours, styles, and aesthetics that reflect the events, gigs, and festivals we perform at.
New rhythms. New energy. New possibilities.
