FIRST REHEARSAL
IT'S FREE TO COME AND TRY!!
Yep, it's a little bit of wonderful chaos.
The teaching style is a "copy after me", so don't be too worried if you don't get it straight away. We have members that have been performing for more than 10 years and people that have just joined with no experiences (and everything in between).
The benefit of being in a section is that you can follow along to the person next to you. And, in no time at all, you'll start recognising the rhythms and know the song (but give yourself a few weeks).
In order to keep the energy high, the rhythm going and ensure everyone is having fun, we try to keep the 'lecturing' to a minimum and just get the song going with plenty of repetition. There is no sheet music, but there are little 'cheat' sayings that you will learn along the way to help remember the rhythms.
Most importantly... relax... enjoy ... hit the drum hard!!
The Instruments

The Songs
We have a few songs and most of them are made up of a few rhythms.
Some things to know:
Rhythm = a repeating rhythm of the song
Break = A small 'break' in the rhythm where there is a set, learnt bar(s)
Bridge = a sequence that connects two rhythms
1. Drum Up
2. George
3. Ryan Reggae
4. Da' Funk
5. Tribal Tiff
6. Mega Party

The Second Rehearsal
If you haven't chosen your instrument, now is the time (pending availability). But, don't worry, there is always a chance to change around and try different instruments along the way.
Rehearsal fee = $10
Membership fee = $50
(if you want to gig, and after 5 rehearsals)
Once you are a member, that instrument is assigned to you for the remainder of the season.
(Unless you miss 5 rehearsals)
When we perform, you just have to wear black.
But you can make it your own, black overalls, black jackets, wrist bands, hats, etc.
Some performances through the year may have a specific "costume" to them (for example, Balingup is a medieval festival) for these gigs we will have a costume requirement.
Important documents:
1. Membership form
2. Rules of the group
3. Constitution of Drum Up
Communication in the group
We use a few different methods for communication:
1. SPOND APP - this is a community based app that is free to download and use. It allows us to send push notifications to everyone for rehearsal and for gigs.
You can also pay your weekly rehearsal fee easily through the app.
2. Facebook Messenger - We have two groups: 'Drum Up' is for general group information, photos etc. it is the quick way to connect to everyone and will usually double information that is sent from spond. 'Catch Uppers' is a seperate social group page. This is run by the members of the group and provides opportunities for hang outs outside of drumming. We ask everyone to follow the group rules and code of conduct as well.
